I'm a complete newb here but I managed to GED my xoom using the method you described, so thank you very much for that. I got the ICS update and I love it. It seems to be quite a bit quicker and smoother than honeycombe. The only problem i'm having is that now that my xoom is effectively a US version I cant use the BBC news app, and I can no longer watch iplayer or ITV catchup, even if i go through my browser (dolphin hd). Does anyone know of a work around for this? or will I have to revert back to stock if I want to use them?

    Many thanks for any help.

Ok firstly thanks for the tutorial and Hi everyone !

Brand new UK Wifi Xoom. I've unlocked the bootloader with xoot, I then go to try and root - which is where I'm having the issue.

Xoot says I need recovery before I can root but when I attempt to flash recovery the CMD prompt window advises I have flashed recovery (followed by the instructions of how to enter recovery on the Xoom) but no matter what I do on the Xoom it sits on the Motorola logo with something about 'entering a protocol' on the top left.

    Could someone help ?

    UPDATE:

Ok so I now have recovery, and also have it rooted. I installed the ged update which it seemed to be doing fine, then I get the Android triangle warning, after 5 minutes it boots and in about shows 3.0.1 as the version - no further updates come through ...

Valleyslad... I have to the same problem, I think there is a way around it. Somebody posted a link to an app called market enabler, you can search for it on Android Market. I think you have to have your xoom rooted first though.

Welcome to the forum.Glad you decided to join us. If you get the android triangle, that's the stock recovery and not CWM. We're getting more and more that have had problems with Xoot, the easiest way to root is Universal Root.

    Thanks for the welcome

Ok so I've gone back to the start (I had a backup of my stock 3.2) and re-opened the bootloader, installed CWM recovery and re-rooted with xoot (sorry did it before the reply)

Should I re-root again using the Universal Root method ? Would that be affecting the update to ICS ?

Or would it be ok for me now to just install a stock ICS build via CWM recovery ?

Ok so tried an update to 4.0.3 via CWM and it installed fine but then sat at the ICS boot animation for 15 minutes.

Decided to go back to my 3.2 backup again - just don't think my Xoom wants ICS lol

If you are sure you're rooted, I'd just flash one of the ICS roms. Are you wifi or 3G/4G?

Thanks for the reply, just wifi only.

    Definitely rooted

It was a rookie error I was making, didn't factory reset in CWM before install of the ICS rom so it wouldn't load.

All sorted now with update_US-Xoom-WiFi-4.0.3-IML77_stachre_v03 .

    Phew lol

Also everything works exactly the same and even Android market shows up in £'s. The only thing is it will be in US language and the keyboard will be a US one and not UK. If you use Swift Key X tablet it wont matter as you can download the English language anyway.

Unfortunately it will wipe everything when you unlock the bootloader. I have only had my Xoom for a month so I didn't mind loosing my game saves (gives me a reason to play again) so backup any documents, photos, music and films to your PC before you start.

You can get Xoot here: [TOOL] XOOT 1.1: Root your XOOM and more! - xda-developers just download the ZIP file at the bottom of the first post.
Unzip Xoot to the main directory of your PC (usually C drive)

I also downloaded and installed the xoom USB drivers from the Moto dev website. I am not 100% sure if these are needed but on my first try my computer had trouble picking up my xoom, but after I installed these it seemed to work (please note I restarted my PC after the install). I downloaded the ones for Windows 7 64bit but just download what ever one is relevant for your computer MOTODEV > Documentation & Tools > USB Drivers

The US stock rom image came from the Moto Dev website but you will have to register before you can download anything. Its a simple registration and wont take you long.
On the Moto Dev page you need go about half way down the page and look for the section MZ604 - XOOM WITH WIFI. At the bottom of that section you will see Build HWI69 for US Retail, which is what you need to download: MOTODEV > Products > Device Software
Once you have downloaded this extract the contents straight into the main Xoot folder on your PC and overwrite any files that may already be there.

Now connect your xoom with USB, make sure USB debugging is selected on your xoom (this should happen automatically but check in settings just in case)

Open up the Xoot folder and click on the Xoot batch file icon (looks like little gears)
A black command box will open up, press S to go into the bootloader settings and type unlock and hit return.

Follow the commands on the command box and then the same on your xoom and it will unlock the bootloader.

Once that has completed close Xoot on your PC and restart your Xoom (you may have to go through the set up screens on your xoom to get back to the home screen) again make sure USB debugging is selected on your xoom

Again open Xoot batch file icon but this time press D which will take you to the Other Tweaks menu.

Press S and you will be given another set of menus

now type ged and hit return and again follow any instructions on screen or on your xoom(this converts your xoom into a google experience device and uses the US image downloaded from moto dev)

After that has finished your Xoom will start up and after going through the first time set up screens you will have Android 3.0 US. You should then get instant notifications that updates are available (I think I had 3 or 4 in total) install them and eventually you will have ICS!!

It sounds like a lot at first but its straight forward really. On my first attempt I was crapping myself because I had not done it before but afterwards I realized how easy it really was, and now I am chuffed to bits playing with ICS

Also note this does not root your xoom, only unlocks the bootloader and converts it to a GED. There is an option to root but I have not played with that yet

Good luck and if you have any problems just let me know. I will try my best to help
    Thanks worked a treat. Although
the contents of the file: MZ604_HWI69 is copied to the root folder called XOOT.

That's where I messed up and got failed messages.

I tried to use this app, but it did not make any difference to my UK MZ604 wifi only xoom, I had to go back to stock to get my local apps (BBC Iplayer, BBC News, Sky News, etc).

One question I have is - I am rooted with the Universal Root at the moment, so I can backup all my apps up using Titanium backup - If I rooted with the US (ICS) would it then allow me to put all my local apps back on from my backup and work within the US (ICS).

Not sure about that, I've never used Titanium backup, hopefully someone else will know more.
