You could try downloading the recovery again if there were. Also make sure you're using the cable that came with the Xoom, and a USB socket on your PC that is on the motherboard (usually the ones at the back).

Seem you success to unlock and try as zig suggested.
Apart from it, double check to ensure USB Debugging is enable.

If you are saying you have re-locked the bootloader, then that will be why you can't flash a custom recovery.

You need to unlock again, then you can flash the recovery and root.

Ok, this is unusual then. Let's try a different recovery.

The instructions say "Note: there are more current recovery options available which are likely compatible; however, these instructions haven't yet been updated accordingly," so there's nothing to stop us. I doubt this will work by the way, but it won't take long to try.

This is the recovery I prefer:

    unofficial[RECOVERY] TWRP 2.2.0 with on-screen keyboard!

Sweet, I was going to try another recovery as suggested above but was unsure if it was safe. I will give a shot when I get a chance. Thanks again.

used your recommended recovery and love it, never used but will forever! however flashed 3x still andy on his back with triangle however, it seems when i adb reboot recovery it was getting over written, so i tried the following:
Once you have verification on your device that this has been flashed:
    - Reboot your device by holding Volume
    Up + Power.
    - Then 3 seconds after you see the "Motorola logo", hit Volume Down. this worked why i cannot tell you maybe someone can? but flashed the rooted stock and i am up and running, thanks very much.
