How to manually update your Xoom to 3.1 from 3.0.1 -- NO DATA LOSS OR WIPE REQUIRED

I take no credit for any of the work, all of it goes to p3droid. I just want to post this because I have been searching for a manual update that does not require setting up of the apps all over again for a week and finally found it.

I just did this and updated my device from 3.0.1 to 3.1. I did this step for step and had no problems. You should be familiar with fastboot & adb and device should be in usb debugging mode.

The original how to is here: How to manually update your Xoom to 3.1 from 3.0.1

I've modified some of the instructions to make it easier to understand. Anything with three dashes "---" before it should be type (copy and pasted) into the command prompt on the pc.

You will need to be rooted to begin this process.

    Step 1. Files

Step 2. Place your phone into fastboot mode (volume down and power)
    --- fastboot flash system system.img
    --- fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
    --- fastboot reboot

Step 3. open up command terminal on your phone type the following
    --- adb remount
    --- adb push su /system/bin/su
    --- adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
    --- adb shell chmod 4755 /system/app/Superuser.apk
    --- adb shell chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
    --- adb reboot

At this point in time you should have a stock 3.0.1 system (rooted) and the stock recovery. Next we have to flash the 3.0.1 boot.img

Step 4. Place your phone into fastboot mode (volume down and power)
    --- fastboot flash boot boot.img
    --- fastboot reboot

This will put your phone back in a stock state and ready to flash the update.zip

Step 5. From the command prompt type the following:
    --- adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
    --- adb shell
    --- su
--- cd /cache/recovery (if recovery doesn't exist you will need to create it - mkdir /cache/recovery).
    --- cat /sdcard/update.zip > /cache/recovery/update.zip
    --- echo '--update_package=CACHE:/recovery/update.zip' > command
    --- reboot recovery

If you have done this correctly. When your phone restarts in recovery you will see an Android with gears and a progress bar beneath it.

    Now lets get rooted again.

Step 6. Restart phone in fastboot mode
    --- fastboot flash boot boot3-1.img
    --- fastboot reboot

Granted it was only my second post, but I was hoping to be considered a member.

I am entirely sorry... I worded that quite poorly... 1 post or 10,000.... everyone is a member. :-)

I meant that this mechanism hasn't been "approved" the way our own guides have been. I know the wipe is a pain but there have been a few bricks caused by your posted mechanism. People can go ahead and follow these steps, we just try to add a level of QA here that you might not see in other places.
    Keep on Xoomin'

    Heeeeelllllpppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 3G/Wifi Xoom. The model is MZ601. I have tried this method truly about 10 times trying to get it to work. I have went through this whole thread and read and tried everything that everyone has said. My Xoom is in kuwait so I really need my 3G to work. But on the other hand I would really need my memory card to work also. Is there anyone that could help because I have flashed so much that I think I might pick up 3G signals myself or format my brain. Your help is greatly appreciated. Up until now I have never had any problems really with flashing or upgrading any of my phones. When I finally get to the point of waiting for the android with the gears, its goes for about a third of the way, then it stops and shows the android with warning triangle. this has happened everytime. Now I am lost. Don't know what to do. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

No it's not from US. It's an International Model. I guess this thread is only for US models.

Yes. If you already flashed the images from here then you changed the radio to a US version. You would need the stock images of your xoom depending on country. You can check Motorola's site and see if they have your models stock images. Otherwise, you could probably send it in and have it reflashed.
