Rooting and future Android updates
Hi folks,
I've rooted my wifi Xoom (UK wifi flashed with US stock, updated to 3.2 then rooted) - but rooting is new to me. I have resisted the temptation to play with kernels and ROMs so far. I have installed ClockwordMod and a couple of root apps but that's as far as I have gone.
USB mass storage would be nice but there is no other , killer feature that is tempting me to flash kernels. And to be honest I don't know enough about custom ROMs for them to be too tempting.
So I think I will stay with the basic 3.2 o/s for now. What will (should) be the effect of being rooted when Android 3.3 - or whatever is next - turns up? Am I likely to be unable to update 'normally' and need to update using CWM somehow? Or is it more likely that the update will install and I will lose root access? Or...?
thanks,
Ben

In all likelihood the ota just won't work and you'll have to update through CWM.

There have been a couple of members with rooted Xooms that did accept the OTA and it really messed them up. If you root be sure not to accept any OTA. The Rom I run on my phone has the OTA's blocked.

Rooting is fun but don't do it if you want reliability, just wait for the updates. Oh boy, I am gonna get attacked for that statement.
Adios XOOM it has been, well an experience

Really? Not had any root related stability issues on my Xoom.

Ok, reliability was a bad choice of words, just going by the problems rooted people are having with updates, maybe they are not experts like you two. So a better statement would be wait for updates unless you know what you are doing, or are interested in trying something on the technical side of the Xoom.
I have done a lot of "rooting" or hacking in my day, started with hacking into my TRS-80 operating system. It has been fun. Now I race vintage race cars and get my technical jollies from being a software developer at work. I use technology now but don't like it in my cars. Give me a distributor and carburetor and I am a happy camper.
