here is the deal.

everyone has the sms/dialer phone app on their Xoom. if you go to applications 'all' you will see the phone icon app/dailer

DSG is rooted, hence access to the hidden app, but gsm radio/data plans do not give access to sending sms/calls. the Xoom lacks a voice plan/required hardware, hence it cannot make voice calls/send sms.

this can only be accomplished via voip apps

DSG hasnt a clue, and will never get satisfactory resolution

I can RECEIVE and SEND sms from my XOOM via gsm!

gsm doesnt matter-umts/lte/cdma will do the same. the Xoom needs a voice #, or google #/voip for data.

you downloaded an sms client app ( the Xoom has no native sms support) and voice calls cant be heard. this is a known issue.

your just spinning your wheels. this hack is from march 2011, if it worked everyone would have it instead of using voip groove ip/google

enable calling and sms texting

first go to google voice, and get a free phone number

second, set it to forward to google talk, set your voicemail up, etc

download these two apps

(note there is a free limited version of grooveip, but its an older/buggy version)

google voice (enables texting and voicemail from tablet)

now you will have to tweak the settings to get it perfect, and for checking my voicemail, i set up the number in my favorites (call your own google number to check voicemail from grooveip)

Yep Google Voice, I did the finger work for SMS on my Xoom. Not to talk or phone usage,
but to send and receive SMS messages so Prey Open source anti-theft solution for laptops, phones & tablets – Prey could do it's thing.

No matter which route I tried software is required, Google Voice is the best as it supplies you
with a phone number which others charge for, and your already part of Google (same ToS)

Voice is just an added extra for me, I'll most likely never use. Memories of the Nokia N-Gage
and web pages asking what would you hold against your head are still fresh.

Y'all may want to checkout TextFree. It's available from the play store and gives you a free number to use for your texting. I used to use it for quite some time until i switched to Google voice. It always did what it was supposed without any cost. Don't know how good it is now as i haven't used it for 4 or 5 months.
