Huh? You couldn't be further from the truth. Used my Xoom both on speaker and bluetooth to make IP calls whilst in Italy over the holiday. Worked like a charm and holds a heck of a lot longer charge than a smartphone. Truly a great product. Now, if only ICS will make it a bit snappier.... :-O

    incorrect.

the Xoom tablet isnt meant to make calls.

if it was, there would be no need to install third party apps on it to enable voip voice calling functionality, and voice capability would be available out of the box

I prefer groove ip with google voice. You get calling in and out, voicemail, and texting.

Although I wouldn't you could replace your phone with it.

Well, sure, making IP calls is fine. Your laptop can do that too. What I mean is, tablets aren't intended to make phone calls over cell networks and act as cell phones.

@oldblue, I agree, I wouldn't want to carry the Xoom around as a mobile phone. But as a 'phone' while I'm in the hotel room, especially with a bluetooth connection, it's just brilliant. Candidly, I use GrooveIP on my SGN also when I travel and have wifi. I tell you, as the telecom providers see wireless revenue fall, data rates are going to start to increase quickly.

@rive, presumably you don't use skype on your laptop then?

That's my issue with these 3G/4G tablets - they have connectivity to a cell network but... you need another device to actually make a "real" phone call (try using Skype or Google Talk from a moving vehicle.) So, you're cruising along and find something interesting on your Xoom, want to tell someone about it, and now have to get out a cell phone and juggle it around to make the call. Check out the specs on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 (international version) and you'll see an all-in-one device that includes an unlocked GSM function - perfect as a one size fits all device IMHO.

Keep telling yourself that, buddy. Besides, why do we need one device? Many people have more than one pair of shoes for different activies, more than one car, etc.

I think his point was that if the Tab can do it why can't the Xoom? I would be highly doubtful that the little Tab had any different radio hardware - just decent software that can handle calls.
