    Power cord for Xoom

    Hi all,
Apologies if this has been covered (many times :-) in other threads. I've been reading reviews of the Xoom compared to reviews of the Samsung Tab on amazon.com and I was surprised to read that the Xoom has its own power cord? Does this mean that the power cord I use to power my Droid X won't work with the Xoom? I'm loathe to have to buy new power cords for another Android device. I thought I'd be able to use the cords I already have for my cell phone. Is this true?

    Thanks!!

You can use other devices USB cords, yes, but your xoom probably will not charge much.

Hmmm... but I don't want to have to *add* to the number of chargers I have in my house, car and at work. I was thinking another Android device would be able to connect to the chargers I already own, thereby cutting down on the number of accessories I'd have to buy to support this new device.

    Guess that's not possible. That's a shame

Not sure what the technical name is for the type of connection that the Xoom uses for charging -- the end that plugs in to the Xoom looks like 3.5mm headphone jack...

Yes. it has been covered many times! The Xoom uses a 12V charger with a tip similar in size and shape to the current Nokia chargers. The chargers you have for your phones, MP3 players and other media devices are all 5V and therefore can be charged from any USB port or charger capable of delivering at least 1Amp. The Xoom however, is a unique 12V device which can draw up to 2.5Amps when being charged. The Xoom CANNOT be charged via its USB port.

There are many chargers available on eBay which claim to be able to work with the Xoom but these show a MiniUSB connector. These will not work. I can only suggest that you buy a genuine Motorola charger. Some VZW stores are selling them really cheap at the moment. You might even be able to pick up a standard dock, which comes with a charger.

    Cheers,

    Eric

This, VZW stores are closing out Xoom accessories for fantastic prices, standard docks are $10 and "HD" speaker docks are $20. I've managed to accumulate 4 chargers for my Xoom for little money/effort. Only 1 I had to pay ful" price for. The Xoom obviously comes with one. I bought a dock when I first got the Xoom, that's 2. I got a third when I did the 4G upgrade and received another standard dock free. And I just picked up the speaker HD dock for $15. (marked down to $20 from $130 plus an additional 25% off for my company discount.) The speaker dock is different though in that it doesn't have a separate charger, its just integrated into the dock itself because it has powered speakers.

It is kind of a pain to have yet another wall wart but no big deal, the docks make it easy to just drop the Xoom in when I'm at home. I keep one charger in my work bag but I haven't had to use it in months. Actually, I don't think I've had to use it more than once or twice ever. Its pretty hard to run down a Xoom battery in one day.
