    Data recovery after device wipe?

Hello all, long story short, I was attempted to root my Xoom Wifi so that way I can use Titanium Backup to migrate to my Transformer Prime. I followed the directions posted on a thread here, and somehow when I unlocked it, the tablet decided to format it.

What are my options to try and recover the data? I've done data recovery on Windows based systems before, but never anything with Android.

Welcome to the forum.Glad you decided to join us. The unlock process wipes your Xoom, there aren't many options of backing up an unrooted Xoom. If you're rooted you could try this app before you over write to much of your data.

Could you point out that thread, so we can see if it needs to be edited? It's just that the first thing ANY unlock instructions for our tablet should tell you is it will completely format your /data partition, reverting your tablet to first boot.

The guide I used very clearly pointed out that unlocking meant wiping. The new consolidated ones mention the new functionality in the 4.0 adb that allows you to backup your data; I used that and it worked well, recovered about 95%--but you have to run it before unlocking.

There is an app called Undelete that supposedly recovers delete files, never used it though.

Do what gibbs1984 says, and see if it helps you retrieve at least critical files.

The real problem with Xoom and all HC+ devices is that they use Microsoft's MTP protocol. So most desktop programs cannot access the "file system properly" and hence cannot do much with the device. So, for ex, you cannot use your desktop data recovery solution. There maybe, just maybe, linux based solutions, but I am not aware of anything.

Thank you for the replies. I've had my Xoom Wifi since launch about a year ago, and have been lurking on here but never needed to post as someone always had posted the same questions and answers I had.

Here is the thread I used to root my device, I got to step E with typing the commands in the command prompt, and thats when it formatted.

I understand that it is at my own risk and all that fun stuff, but if there was a 100% chance of dataloss that should of been mentioned. One of my friends who has rooted various Android phones said it shouldn't of lost any data either.

I am going to play around with the Undelete program, hopefully I can salvage something!

Yeah unlocking the Xoom does do an unannounced wipe. I had known this for some time but when I rooted mine not too long ago I had forgotten about it. Thankfully most of my data is stored in Google Music, Amazon and Dropbox but I did lose a lot of photos.
