"Your phone does not accept automatic settings" - 3G xoom won't accept sim

    I have a UK 3G Xoom.

It works perfectly with a UK "3" data sim.

Now I am in Kazakhstan, and have tried to switch to a local data sim. I've tried two (K-cell, Activ) sims that are specifically intended for data services, but neither works in the Xoom. Both sims are recognised, as is the network operator, but there is a "no internet connection" message. Occasionally a message arrives - presumably from the network operator - that "your phone does not accept automatic settings" or similar.

Clearly the data sims are functional, and the problem is something to do with the Xoom not picking up the network settings. I've tried uninstalling the UK "3" app (in case it somehow is locking the Xoom) and also rebooting the Xoom. No success.

    Any ideas?

Is this a Xoom problem? Surely it should allow sim-switching?

    Thx

What I can think of for now for you to try:

    - Power off your Xoom.
    - Reinsert the data/sim card.
    - Power on your Xoom, let it settle a while.
    - Put to airplane mode.
    - Power off your Xoom and wait a while.
    - Power on your Xoom, let it settle a while.
    - Disable airplane mode.
    - go to mobile network setting, check your network mode and network operator.
    - Try your connection.

Hope it help or someone will share some input soon

    Hi Astrix,

Thanks for taking the trouble to post advice.

I've tried all of that, to no avail. The sim card(s) is clearly identified, as is the correct network - there is even the message "registered on network" after an auto or manual network selection. It seems that for some reason the Xoom will not "handshake" or whatever is necessary to start data traffic.

The local network operators here don't use any branded handsets or similar locked devices, and the sims are sold as universal data sims. All current types of Apple & Android devices are on sale, so data traffic is just the same as anywhere else. (Actually, the Xoom is the only device I haven't seen on sale so far, so I haven't come across someone with specific local knowledge of the device).

    ????????

    You're welcome

Not so sure if your Xoom is carrier unlock..etc.
    Is your Xoom model MZ601?

Hope someone can share some light.

If yours is MZ601, what I can think of is to flash custom ICS firmware.. EU 3G MZ601_umts from Team EOS.

Not very sure about the result. If you think of doing that you can check my signature.

Let us know before you attempt.

I had a similar problem recently, trying to get a Portuguese data sim to work.

I think you'll need to find the correct APN settings for your carrier. If you know someone who has a similar sim that works on android you should be able to copy their APN settings and input them on your xoom - something like Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names should get you to where you need to enter the settings (I'm on ICS, these steps may vary according to your OS).

    Good Luck!

EDIT: a quick look on the internet shows kcell's site, which is a bit sketchy, but this page (http://www.kcell.kz/en/?l=physsettings&y=general) implies you may get away with just having an APN with a name of "internet" with all other fields blank, you never know, it may just work... (my Portuguese APN wasn't much more complex)

    Valleysboy,

    You found the solution!

In the end, it was only necessary to (1) name a "Name" (2) name an "APN" (3) enter the proxy port number. The connection then started working.

Who would have thought it could be so trivial, and yet so obscure?

    Thanks for the expertise!
