you cant. by their very nature unsecured networks are insecure and can be intercepted/and any non ssl webpages can be viewed by others on the network.

thats why if you go Starbucks, and use the free wifi, you shouldnt log into/access banking accounts

Depends on what you mean by secure. Like Rive said you cant be very secure on someone else's wifi network. At least make sure what you are logging into is what you intend to. As far as logging into something like your bank goes i wouldn't unless you really have to then change the password as soon as you are able to from a secure pc. If you are just doing email, facebook etc then i wouldnt worry too much but i wouldstill keep track of what you logged into and change those passwords when you get back. Thats just my 2 cents worth.

I use a small/tiny travel router that functions in several modes including a hotspot (even with captive portals) from an open wifi signal (or wired). Like all routers it offers encryption, mac filtering, firewall, etc. I am using it now from a hotel room and have my Xoom and all wifi devices connected to it. Although it provides a layer of security, I never access personal financial information unless at home.

I've been too lazy so far, and instead basically just refuse to use public wifi, but whenever I get around to it, I hope to do this: How to Encrypt All Internet Use on Your Android Phone

    (or something similar, anyway)

I have used a variety of travel routers but this is what I use now as it is full-featured and teeny-tiny. Be aware when looking at less expensive options as they sometimes accept only a wired/ethernet connection and some I have found are 120v AC only. The ASUS can be powered by USB as well as 100-240 AC:

thats a good one, very small. Mine does usb power too but i cant see where it is very useful. If i have it connected to my laptop then it isnt very portable. I suppose if you are strictly using it for security of being behind your own router?
