Sim card for xoom 4g LTE?

I ordered the daily steals new Xoom 4G LTE a few days and am waiting for arrival of it and a 64 gig card.
my question is about the sim card see people talking about. Will it truely work under wireless if i do NOT go to Verizon and get a sim card and at least a months of service?
I saw some reference that the 4g version wouldn't work at all w/o a sim???
I don't currently get 4G where we live, so don't want to be paying for service i don't use(turned 4g off on the Droid4 to save battery) It would be nice to use it anywhere like with my unlimited data on the droid but that's not gonna happen per Verizon when i talked about swapping to a Xoom in December, would lose the unlimited...so guess it will be wireless unless i get a sim with a cheep dataplan? just thinking/ figuring out before my xoom arrives...any suggestions?

I'm wifi only but you can use the 4G Xoom as wifi only if you don't want an additional data charge.

Just to verify for you, i took out my sim card from my 4g xoom and am using wifi to post this message. Works fine.

Thanks Dave! I was just thinking about how my new replacement Droid4 that just arrived will not start up until i remove the sim from the old one having issues... in 3g phones you could have both running as you swapped all your apps and data from one to the other...guess what i will be doing all night! ~150 apps to upload if i recall...

Just checked in on daily-steals, and they still do NOT show it as shipped! Damn! ;-(

One interesting thing is that Verizon LTE SIM cards are exchangeable like GSM SIM cards, with respect to Verizon devices. That means you can take the SIM from your Droid 4 and put it into the 4G Xoom and you will get service, even if LTE is not available in your area. I regularly put the SIM from my company provided Verizon Mi-Fi into my 4G Xoom and it works fine, even in places that only have 3G service.

gotta be a little patient with dailysteals. when i ordered my 3g xoom on aug 22, they didnt ship until the 27th..then another 4 days to get to my place. but it was worth the wait because its in new condition when i got it.

Cool! I hadn't thought about that, too bad swapping the sim outa the Droid4 is a PITA with removing the back, which feels like it will break every time you remove it, but i will give it a try! I guess anyone calling me while i play with the Xoom on 3g/4g can go to voicemail and get a call back! ;-)
