Well, for some strange reason it started working again. Could be because my last words after trying stuff out of desperation were "if this doesn't work I'm going to collect on my AHD service contract and buy me a Nexxus."
I kept clearing the caches of just about every app on this thing, did forced stops, and deleted the Google account I created last night in trying to see if it was a play store issue. After about the fourth reboot and just before doing a complete factory reset, it started working correctly. I got access to the play store, all the apps updated, and its stable again. I redownladed Avast and it is working as it should.
I think it heard me saying it was time for a new tablet.
I have no clue what caused it. I have no clue why it started working correctly. But all downloads are no longer on auto.

factory reset fixed it. happens all the time after a version update (apps break). a factory reset usually fixes it all

didn't even get to the point of doing a factory reset...but that was the next step....and if that didn't work.....OOpppssie...I dropped it...

The best way to fix this common problem is to go to settings/accounts/then delete your Google account then add the same one back again you should find this will fix this without having to do factory resets also its a good idea to make sure your android device is set to sync/backup with Google servers so no data will be lost if it happens again in the future.

It was set to sync and update with the google server, but still had an issue with not connecting to the server properly. Even when I called google they verified that all the data on the server was intact and all my apps were there. Something in the system update it just didn't like.

Still hard to believe it was the update. It was so minor. And google should know all potential effects on Play Store. Weird. I can see problems with Avast, though. Glad the reboots helped and you didn't have to factory reset.

Stupid question I know, but how do you delete your Google account on the Xoom, I went to settings - accounts - google but once there cannot see how to delete.
I changed my Google password using my PC, cleared play store data and cache and then performed a soft reboot, but still cannot download or update from the play store.

4.1.2 xoom weirdness here too
Hi my uk gedified Xoom did exactly the same thing. I first noticed immediately after the update that a couple of apps wouldn't update. When I checked I found I couldn't get anything to update or download new apps. Movie rentals produced the same DBA 13 error and wouldn't process payment. I tried resetting framework services and reinstalling play but nothing worked. In the end I created a new account, deleted my old one, rebooted, relogged in my old account and deleted the new one. Now everything updates and downloads OK from play but movies still don't work. The payment gets processed but when you try to play it, it says "the rental period for this movie has expired". Weirdly, when you launch play movies, it shows the rentals with 30 days left, but they won't play or download. Weirder still is that when I accessed the movies on my phone, I can start and stop them at will, without triggering the rental timer!
