Got the problem "no storage space" when installing most stuff

Got the problem "no storage space" when installing most stuff

I'm sure it's a small Internal data partition
Error downloading - There is insufficient space on the device - Samsung Vibrant General - CyanogenMod Forum

MZ604 - 32Gig internal, 16Gig external storage and average 500 Megs of unused Ram.
    - 30 Gigs internal, 14Gigs external available at this time

Cleared caches and history in my apps (I haven't seen that work for anyone),
ran the abd pm setInstallLocation and it showed the SD drive has been the default installation drive.

Tried to reinstalled rooted stock 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 both failed to install; so tried and did installed
    cm-10-20121030-NIGHTLY-wingray.zip
(cm-10-4.1.2-20121030-ZIGACKLY-wingray.zip was 40Megs larger and I was after space).

TWRP 2.3.1.0 is my recovery program (as 2.3.1.1 failed to install)
Factory reset, caches cleared, and might of even formatted (but doubt it as that should of fixed it)

    Relate I'm sure.
I've install my HOSTS file, with X-plorer, ADB, and Twrp, setting the permissions to 400 (I think)
but every time I reboot the HOSTS file is gone /system/etc/ and etc/

I wanted to install the HOSTS file without help, but bit the bullet and used Adaway, it complained
of no data partition space and If I wished to place it elsewhere (can't remember where). The HOST file
is huge as HOSTS file go, just over one Meg.

How would one go about increasing the size of the internal data partition, or
just fix the lack of storage space error?
Clearing it out would just be a temp fix.

I don't use Linux, but I started on a Unix, I've got Cygwin installed so commands are preferred over programs.
One day Linux will install for me (Video card this time).

    Thank you

Next time you flash a rom you may need to format your system under the mounts/storage menu on CWM recovery, not sure where on TWRP.

Using trwp recovery, use wipe/system. Also, with a file explorer check under system /media/video. There might be four videos that can be deleted and free up some system space. Also you can delete ringtones under system/media.
    Hope this helps!

I let the Xoom sit for a few days, when I went to fix (play)
with it, there were no problems, guess it settled in.

Anytime I change anything (electronic) I'll reboot, leave it off for a bit to
discharge the SDram. Then boot em back up, but the Xoom didn't want act right.
I guess it needed more time.

The way I see it, there is indeed a directory size limit on at least two.
Showing the limits is normal for ROM Toolbox Pro so not much work.
The snap shots show three different uses of space.
    (lack of a better word)

    /data
    http://i47.tinypic.com/2j27uh4.jpg (190K)
    shows storage space of SD?

    /cache
    http://i48.tinypic.com/16ad2ps.jpg (140K)
    66Megs used, 100 Megs, so 166 to 200 Megs?

Then the video directory Rob62551 mentioned
    http://i48.tinypic.com/4qfyvt.jpg (185K)
It's very close to being full.

    Thank you for the replies,

I wanted the stock 4.1.2 on my Xoom. I backed up my "stuff" (TitaniumBackup) and used TWRP to format my XOOM.
TWRP has the setting: "use "rm -rf" instead of formatting" - which can't be changed, so I rm -fr'd my Xoom.

Stock 4.12 won't install, and the same problems are popping up, I'll just stay where I am I guess (duh).

I also found everytime a new OS is installed the Xoom's ID changes, I had thought it was burned in.
    - I've been opt-out'ing after every change (Flurry).

    Thanks just the same.

As mentioned running TWRP and 2.6.39.4-CM (26-Oct-12) as google voice finally works
so stopped there. Then put the Xoom away for awhile.

Using ROM Toolbox Pro it shows the system directory (partition) as being full
and I can't install anything. Took the time to search for a fix and found there is none.
Motorola seems to of... well screwed up.

You can read of it here:
"Xoom out of AOSP due to partitioning (Motorola simply didn't plan for the future)"
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2000981

"Some other threads discussing "full partition" problems loading custom ROMs onto the Xoom
led me to some digging around. The short story is that Motorola only allocated 236MB to
the system partition on the Xoom, and the current JB stock build (JZO54K) occupies nearly
    231MB."

Note: the link quoted mentions using du -sk /data/data/* | sort -rn
one of the TWRP developers mentioned that during a rom installation
stuff isn't removed from /data/data but never elaborated. <no cite, no link>

Try doing what rob62551 has stated go to system/media/video & delete all 4 videos these serve no purpose but to hog the extra space you need to flash your ROM of choice & extras if you want.

I did that the first thing, they were substantial and reclaimed a lot of space but didn't fix it. I found the solution and will post it separately.

    Thank you.
