    Sync with iTunes

Many people have have considerable assets tied up in iTunes, and are sitting on the fence or making the wrong choice vis iPad vs Xoom on this basis. So, although this may be this is a dumb question, is there a way to sync android devices with iTunes?

Media Monkey and some other programs will access your iTunes library (including playlists) and sync with the Xoom (and pretty much any other device).

The Xoom will not play DRM protected songs you downloaded from iTunes (although Apple stopped including DRM protection several years ago). You will also not have the ability to apply star ratings to songs on the Xoom and have those ratings transfer back to iTunes.

Unfortunately, you have to stick with the iPad if you have purchased media via iTunes. It's part of their DRM protection. Most DRM protection requires specific players which make use of encryption and permission allowances. In the case of iTunes, Apple is VERY picky about what runs their stuff, so unless it is on their approved list, you won't be able to run their DRM protected material any other way.

While I may seem like a 'pirate' with my music, I tended to avoid DRM material in general.

May I suggest using iSyncr (with optional Wifi add-on) both from the Market? However, until Apple (not trying to start a tangent discussion about this) decides to allow 3rd parties to license their FairPlay DRM, purchases made that employ this will be unavailable for syncing. This mostly applies to videos these days but some music can still contain it.

Can't play DRM? I thought that was about paying artists for there work. Damn yet another marketing ploy in the name of brand protectionism. There must a DRM hack floating around by now.

DRM is there to prevent you from 'giving' free copies of content you purchased from iTunes. Usually it would be like movies, or audiobooks or some music.

iTunes hasn't had DRM on its music downloads for several years. Movies and other video might be different (haven't looked in a while).

So here's a question.. is it illegal to take the DRM off of the music i bought on iTunes and use it on my xoom so long as I don't share it with anyone?

I completely agree with everything I just said

Good question. At one point in time when they abandoned DRM on music one of the Apple mags explained that if you downloaded from iTunes on your computer you could down load to any or all of your devices (Apple) but if you downloaded from itunes to your iPod and then uploaded from the iPod to your iTunes library then downloaded to your iPhone you would have done something wrong. Ownership rights has always been a grey area for Apple.

I believe it is all up to how you want to interpret the DMCA laws (in the US). If you read them as not allowing anyone to circumvent any digital lock, then it is illegal. There are exemptions provided for (like unlocking mobile phones, rooting, etc) but I don't there are any for music, video, etc. So, yes...likely illegal.
