Connecting To Windows 7 Homegroup Possible?

    Hi there,

I'm not sure if this belongs in general discussion or Apps so please move it if nessesary.

I would really like to be able to access the files on my Windows7 homegroup when I'm at home and connected to my Wi-Fi network. I don't need to be able to stream the files or anything... I'd just like to have access to them.

Is this possible? And if so, could someone guide me on how to do it?

    Thank you
    Paul

If you grab "File Manager HD" from the Android market you can do this. This app has a LAN Connection feature that will let you access shared folders on the same subnet.

Your Windows 7 folders must be shared using SMB to be viewable by the Xoom.

    Thanks,

I already had that app and didn't realise it had that capability.

    However... I still need help

What address do I use for the server? Is it the internal ip address of the machine I want to access? (192.168.1.5)... and what do I use as the username and password? I have the password for the Windows7 homegroup.

Sorry for such simple questions. Networking isn't my strong point :-)

When you do a scan from File Manager HD, it will show you all visible clients by IP. Usually I use trial and error to find my Windows box but you can always ping yourself on the Windows machine to see its IP.

    Thank you,

    It is now half working...
I can connect to one of my windows boxes by pressing scan and then clicking on the icon

However the other machine (The one I actually want to access) shows up but clicking on it tells me that the settings are wrong. I don't seem to be able to access it anonymously like with the other machine. What settings on the Windows box would be preventing this?

This is likely the sharing permissions on the folder you are trying to access.

Here is a link I found that discussing file sharing in Windows 7 (hopefully it will help):

No problem! Having shared folder access makes things a lot easier on the Xoom!

I can see my windows PC's from the Xoom, but I cannot see the Xoom from either PC (on WiFi). I have tried sharing folders both via html and via FTP, neither show them in windows file explorer.

I have seen apps that claim to allow media serving from the Xoom but have not tried one. A little Google-fu of android media server might land you in the right spot.
