How much data do I really need?

Okay, so I'm giving some seroius thougth to buying a new Xoom but the I'm scared to death that my actual data usage is going to far exceed VZ's 5GB plan and possibly even the 10GB plan. Can any of you guys give me a real world data usage estimate based on the following:

    1. I'm a Realtor so I plan on using the Xoom with google maps while showing properties. This means a constant GPS connection whild showing properies... A good high side estimate might be 30 hrs per month.
    2. I plan on creating contracts online and and sending said contracts via docUsign (online electronic document signing tool).
    3. I plan on using my Xoom to pull up listing info via the web while away from the office (showing properites, meetings with clients, etc).
    4. I will also use my Xoom at home for web surfing and ect but it will be connected via wifi whenever possible.

If my data usage is going to exceed 5GB/mo a backup plan might be to tether my HTC Thunderbolt (rooted) via free tethering app... Thoughts comments?

    James

From the sound of it I'd be shocked if you exceeded 5 gigs.

I use mine at work and rarely exceed 1 gig a month. Usually web browsing. I rarely stream movies (netflix) via 3g or anything like that. I just looked and I'm 15 days into my billing cycle and i've used 200 mb, most of that was probably a movie I watch at an airport waiting on a delayed layover.

I'm not entirely sure how much data a constant gps connection would use. I know I have the 3Gig plan and use all of it every time. That's just general surfing, streaming talk radio for like 2 or 3 hours each day, and some light video streaming from the web. I am using wifi at home and anywhere I can of course.

A 2 hour movie is going to be a Gig of data, prob a little more, to give you some kind of reference.

I have decided to cancel the plan and just add the hotspot feature to my phone. I think that would be best and would save me money. It is nice to have that 3g connection to fall back on though.

I would say try out the 3Gig plan for a month or just do the hotspot/tether.

does gps take a data connection?
there are apps available that allow you to track data usage, keep apps from updating automatically (is there a setting for wifi only?)
keep to wifi networks whenever possible and a data connection should stay well below 5 gigs of data.

    1. Yes, unless you download a route before leaving home
    2. Yes. Verizon's app works great and can alert you to usage that you preset.
    3. Yes.
I have the 5gb plan. I usually come in around 3gb using it everyday and then burn up the other two gigs at the end of my cycle with Google Music.
