Writing to the external SD card on the Xoom

    Hi all,

After receiving the 3.1 update, here in Hong Kong and having access to the external SD card, I decided to transfer my Wav lossless music files to the external Sd card. Having read on this forum that the SD card cannot be access via the Xoom, I used the usb to transfer files from my Viao laptop. All went well and music is fine and plays from the external SD card. However, in the storage menu in settings, it shows a different file size to what my music files are, actually 3 times the size, although the remaining memory shown is correct. This I think is just a slight bug........although come to think of it, it may be showing the total size of my music files including the internal memory.

Anyway, playing around with Xoom this morning, I have noticed that included with the 3.1 update, was a new Files app. appeared on my All apps. screen. Opening the app. shows two boxes 1. Internal storage and 2. SD card. investigating the app., I have now realized that I can move files internally with the Xoom.

My Question is, "Is the update so fragmented, and that they are so region specific?" if so, then they did a good job with the 3.1 update here

I have noticed as mentioned on this forum, a much snappier UI, browser is much smoother and faster, less FCs but one of my favorites is that on the WIFI signal icon- I can now see upload/download arrows which is a great plus. Negatives, just one really, battery seems to be draining faster or maybe I have been playing more with it of late

Yes it is that fragmented as the us Xoom is a GED and has to use Google's method for implementing the card while the international versions are free to use a Motorola devised method.

I got the 3.2 update over the weekend on my 3G Xoom, which is the OS update we needed for the SD Card. After realizing that the card was read-only from the Xoom interface I read online that someone else used a USB tether to a windows machine in order to move files internally between the /sdcard/Music to /mnt/external1/Music folders on the Xoom. I repeated this process and it worked fine. I was previously using PowerAmp as my media player before the file transfer and found out the hard way that this application doesn't have visibility to the /mnt/external1 file system. I emailed their support over the weekend but I haven't gotten anything in return yet. Anyone else see this issue with PowerAmp? Was there a workaround you were able to perform?

man, what a bummer. We hold out for this card support and wait 2 version releases to get it, only to find out it just kinda works, but heavily caveated. WTF Motorola?

There's always the option of rooting.

should read WTF google. I get your frustration though.

Until a solution is forth coming just use stock music player plus the Equalizer app. which sounds just as good if not better than the poweramp app. unless the stock music player also cant read the external SD card.

Yeah, I have the stock player now and fortunately it does read the SD Card. I liked PowerAmp because it also downloaded album art, and had a built in equalizer. Maybe a standalone EQ App is worth looking into until this gets fixed. Thanks for the response. As for rooting, I'd probably brick my tablet

to be honest, I still dont understand the rationale for Google to set up the SD card in its idiosyncratic way.

under these circumstances, I must commend Motorola on their implementation of the SD card and the simplistic way they have managed to just separate the internal memory and SD card like on PCs.

I didnt like the UI on poweramp. Just get the cover art downloader app. works really well. remember to clear memory of music player everytime you d/l new music art, otherwise the art wont show. Also with the cover art app. you can d/l the picture from the internet and use the app. to retrieve art from your gallery.
