Why are Android Tablets so expensive?

I really can not understand you can get a cheap laptop at about $200 but a tablet with about the same hardware costs us $400 - $569 it makes no sense. Sure the iPads cost the same but Apple products are always expensive. Look what happened when HP bailed out of the Touchpad they sold out in days when the price dropped. Can tablets be sold in the $200 to $300 range? and have manufacturers make profit? or am I missing something and you can not compare cheap laptops and tablets

The Xoom pretty much followed the iPad pricepoint.... Monkey see, Monkey do.

They have dropped the price since then..... $200 might be a stretch. I wonder how much Xoom costs to make? It is definitely built better than some of the $200 laptops mentioned earlier.

I think the generally higher resolution screens and the fact that they are capacitive makes them more expensive to produce than netbooks.

Tablets have no moving parts like laptops which makes them a lot more durable. They weigh less which makes them easier to carry around. And no manufacturers can't make profit selling in the $200-$300 range. I believe the Xoom (and most other HC tabs) cost about $350 to manufacture.

To explain the price you have to go way up the production chains. This is true for all cutting edge tablets and phones regardless of who is making them. The core of the problem is that tablets and phones have a very short viability period. They are only current or hot tech for about 6 months. There's always something new and better to compete with.

So look at the production chain. A manufacturer has to research, specify, design, prototype, construct, fcc/ce clear, market, and sell a product that will only be at the top of it's sales curve for about 6 months and won't even be on shelves after 18 months. Time == money so the faster you do all this the more it costs. The manufacturer needs to pay back all those costs and make a profit on a product 1 year (more or less) in development and only 6 months at the top of it's sales curve. When you throw around the millions it takes to develop something cutting edge, it boggles the mind that they can sell it for $600. Chances are the units that we all have now actually cost 2x that. Units they sell later and tech they recycle into Xoom 2 (3, 4, ...) will actually start to find the profit in the whole venture.

You can compare it to the video game industry too. When the PS3 came out, it was super bleeding edge tech. They were selling for $600 but it was costing sony something like $1200 per unit to build at the time. It took 2 or 3 years to finally start turning a profit. And now 5 years in they are lowering prices and still making money. And they are just now talking seriously about a next gen product.

Tablets and Phones don't have the luxury of a 5+ year lifespan. They need to make their money in 16 to 24 months. So they are expensive. If you want cheap, wait for the Chinese knockoffs to siphon the tech into the $200 units you can import. But there will always be something much better on the market in that "Geeze that's just expensive but I"m willing to pay it" price range.

Cheap PCs are cheap because they aren't so cutting edge. The $200-300 units are re-re-recycled tech from the $5k business laptops that were release 3 years ago. Parts are common bought in extreme quantities built to lower standards etc.

All the reviews say it's pretty cool, especially if you own a Vizio TV.
