I'm rooted, actually never tried to look at the microSD card before I rooted since it was the first thing I did when I got the device, but on my Xooms it shows microSD on my list of files, from there I just click on it to view what's in the folder. Not sure if that helped but its all I have to offer you.

Hey..the first thing you need to do is root then you need to download es explorer or root explorer...then you can see everything on your xoom system files as well as sd card

Using Astra,I clicked on Iternal Memory, then on "UP". Exterrnal 1 shows up, then I Bookmarked it and it will show up all the time.
Works for me but if there is something better, please share.
