Rooting Guide Questions

Is the SDK for development required for rooting? I know you guys live and breath this stuff and do it with blindfolds and one arm behind your back but I'm terribly antsy when it comes to $800 devices that I depend on every day

Also, there is an inaccuracy:

8. cd C:\SDK_tools is your path. Now enter:

This doesn't start ADB - it returns the command arguments and is probably redundant. I've found that executing adb devices will start the daemon.

c:\SDK_tools>adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *

You can use Easy ADB instead of the sdk. I've always used the whole sdk and keep it updated. I didn't write the guide but to start adb and check that my device is recognized I type:

Cd (enter)
C:\Users\M. Grant\Documents\Android SDK\Android SDK\platform-tools (enter)

and I get the string of numbers back so I can start whatever I'm going to do. And I know my path is different than the example but it's just the way I set it up.

You are using Universal Root, aren't you?

Yep universal that uses SDcard.

Well that was easy ... but yeah that guide needs a re-write or at least a clean-up. Now off to get ICS ...

How did u get cwm img installed I used easy adb got bootloader unlocked no problem but can't load img to get rooted..I've the img in the sdk tools folder...

I image needs to be in the same folder you unblocked from. See if this makes more sense, it's by one of our members - Astrix.

A. Xoom USB Driver: Download and Install: here


B. Set Up Easy ADB: Need for that process


1. Download the EasyADB(SDK_Tools.zip): here
2. Extract the SDK_Tools.zip files
3. Copy SDK_Tools folder
4. Navigate to C: drive
5. Paste SDK Tools folder on root of C: drive


C. Download this recovery image(recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img) and place it in the "SDK_Tools folder" at your PC C:drive: here

D. Download Custom ICS and Gapps: here and place it in your External SDCard

E. Once the neccessary file in place: You can start the process


Open command prompt in Windows Start icon (in search textfield type in cmd and press enter)
Once command prompt pop up,type:


cd C:\SDK_tools
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot reboot

*Edit: After reboot ensure your USB debugging is enable.

Open command prompt in Windows Start icon (in search textfield type in cmd and press enter)
Once command prompt pop up,type:

cd C:\SDK_tools
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img


Once you have verification on your device that this has been flashed, reboot your device by holding volume up + power.
Then 3 seconds after you see the "Motorola logo", hit volume down.


You should now see "Android Recovery" in the top left corner. Hit volume up to boot into recovery.
In "Android Recovery", wipre cache, wipe factory data, wipe dalivik cahce all withinh the recovery.
Go into "install zip from sdcard" -> "Choose zip from sdcard", then select the Custom ICS.zip and then flash Gapps file you downloaded/put in SDcard.

Reboot and Enjoy!

Yes, they have stable ICS roms for several devices.
