Saving apks for later install question

There are a lot of times when I am not near a wifi spot and would like to know if it is possible to save my apps apks to an external drive for later reinstallation if I should have to wipe and restore my Xoom. I have 8gbs of apps on my current phone and foresee this on my Xoom and my 5gbs of Verizon data will not cover this. Does the Xoom store the files or are they deleted after install?

It stores the files in data/app but you need root access to be able to access them, and Root Explorer from the Market

Neither of those can see the data/app folder unfortunately.

Actually they have access to data/app but you won't see all of them. They won't see system/app at all. Root Explorer is a must for any rooted user.

Ok now I can see them, but how do I get them on my laptop? I copied the App file to a location that my laptop can see it, but when I copy it over the file is empty inside of Win7. I can't figure out how to email the file. Maybe I can use drop box.

Ya use dropbox. Move the apk to your sd card/internal memory, long press, send, dropbox, then your pc will sync with it.

Wow. That was a pain to set up. I had to create a new folder in Dropbox called APKBackups. Then using Root Explorer I copied and pasted the the apk backup folder from the Xoom's /data/app to the /sdcard. Then using ES Explorer I browsed to the apkbackup folder on the Xoom, multiselected them all, long-pressed, sent to drop box. There has go to be an easier way, but it is done.
