RESOLVED: Do USB flash drives work after rooting or are custom kernels a must?

I'm getting a xoom soon. Rooting it should be fine, but I'd like to avoid a custom firmware and kernels if possible. However I'll need USB OTG for flash drives. Does that necessiate Tiamat or Launchpad, or will rooting be enough?
    Thanks.

You'll need the kernel to the best of my knowledge. Out of curiosity, why would you want to avoid that, if you don't mind rooting?

Thanks for the quick reply. I've used roms with my samsung galaxy spica. I didn't like the number of force closes and general instability. So I was hoping to avoid those by sticking to stock firmware...

I can only speak for my self, but I've noticed no loss of stability with Tiamat.

Btw, this [GUIDE][WIFI ONLY] How to Root the Xoom from Stock 3.1 - xda-developers link claims to allow USB OTG, and it seem to use Tiamat. Is that possible?

Probably. I'd use one of the guides here however. We have a much more accessible team to help if anything goes sideways.
