    Do you mean the opaque icons to the vertical left and right of the apps?
    I always thought that they were just a quick scroll tool to go through pages of apps instantly if you have lots.

    I laugh every time that someone posts this. Seriously, folks, this is not rocket science, as there are no rockets.

    Open your app tray. Now go to the next page. Notice anything? Those "shapes" are an outli e of your application icons. You can tap the blue outlines to scroll from page to page instead of swiping, much like you can tap on the edges of your home screens to navigate in landscape mode.
