    Motorola Launches "Unlock My Device"

Double check your calendars – is it April 1st? It’s not? Then there’s been a massive rip in the space time*continuum*as Motorola has officially published the new “Unlock My Device” page. On the site, Motorola device owners can finally unlock their device’s bootloaders and install 3rd party software. Naturally, there are about one million warnings and hoops to jump through, but it has finally come.*

To unlock your device, you will need the Android SDK and Motorola’s Drivers. Once you have those things set up on your computer, it’s merely a “follow the instrcutions” type of deal.*Interestingly enough, when trying to find out which devices are supported by the Unlock Tool, it took us to an “Access Denied” page here.

Fantastic news going into the weekend. We’ll keep checking to see if we can get any more information regarding which devices can now be unlocked using the tool.

Update: Motorola has updated their list of supported devices. There is two phones and two tablets that are currently able to have their bootloaders unlocked.

    Photon Q
    RAZR developer edition
    XOOM – Verizon
    XOOM WiFi

I feel like google buying them out is starting to change them for the better. Maybe the wait won't be too long.

this is good moto is atleast doing something to fix their mistakes with updates even though its mainly the carriers fault (moto should have had a contract with the carriers forcing them to update for us) better then what blackberry's plans are for locking out non market apps when they have no apps to begin with.

the problem is most already know how to unlock and flash but the average consumer doesnt and wont with warnings such as "causing bodily injury or death" lol they make it seem like rooting your device can cause a nuclear fission reaction.

Thing is, they have to give all those warnings. At the end of the day, having thousands of people messing with their devices is something that can cause a massive headache for everyone involved, and moto (like every other company) want to make it explicitly clear that if it breaks, it's not their problem. I'm sure that someone somewhere could do something insane, hurt themselves, and take Motorola to the cleaners because 'They never said not to install a rom that caused the CPU and battery to work so hard that it overheated and melted and now my leg is burnt and then my girlfriend left me and now I'm depressed derp.'.

I'm trying to imagine how unlocking my Android device will cause death. I've checked for face-huggers, rotating knives, copies of Final Destination and frikkin lasers. Nothing.
Annoying signature, but not as annoying as yours

How does this affect developers and their roms? Will this make things easier/harder? Will devs have more fun stuff to tinker with? Will updated gapps be included in the builds instead of being separate?

Is "unlocking" the same as "rooting"?

I'm still unclear as to what this will get me. So if you don't mind, could someone take a minute or two to list some of the advantages of doing this. And please talk to me like I'm 3-years old, because in the world of Xoom, that's all I am. Don't use big words or Xoom lingo or anything like that. Please. Even though I'm not, do consider me stooopid as you respond. ;-)
