@Bazar6: I try doing it with ICS and some of the images like the home button turns out bad when i open them and i cant save them nor edit them at all: fail.png

Can't edit because the layer would say: Index and you can't unlock it
But i can edit some images like this: ic_launcher_settings.png
Also how do you make it that Gimp shows color...i choose a color and the brushes and yet it still shows up white and saves as white
Nevermind, got Gimp to show color
So after opening ic_sysbar_home, i opened a new file and it worked :\

Yea in Gimp you gotta go Image (or View, can't remember ATM) > Mode and make it RGB (whether its index or gray).
Just keeping looking around, all of the core images images are in /system/app/SystemUI and /system/framework/framework-res.apk. Then the other standard apps like browser, settings, etc.
