Yes the Xoom can play 1080p videos just fine when ripped correctly. You can check out my thread here if you wanna read my full review on the topic. There's also a simple YouTube video in there showing the quality.

How? The screen can only do 720p so that is the highezt resolution you can get. The xoom through hdmi output can do 1080p.

You can rip 1080p but that doesn't necessarily mean you can view in 1080p. Since 720p is highest res then thays what you'll get.

I actually do not know too many people that can tell good 720 from 1080. I think people get wrapped around the axel about it.

Thays the truth! Maybe on a 60" hdtv you can tell a small difference in quality but on a 10" screen its nearly impossible to tell. I thought 1080i/720p was sufficient for most hard core videophiles.

and given that I would rather have a HQ 720 over a so-so 1080 of the same file size

Yes if your only planning on playing the ripped videos on your Xoom then a HQ 720 file is probably the better bet when you compare file sizes. But the Xoom can handle 1080 the same way when you hook a blu-ray up to a 720 TV and click info or display it tells you your displaying 1920x1080. But the difference in quality on a 10 inch screen should be non-existant and you would be better off increasing the bit rate and dropping down to 720 unless you plan on using the HDMI out like me.

Agreed with you guys I cannot tell any different between a 720 p video or better on my TV. Actually Idk rather have something a bit less cause the size with be smaller.

Reminds me of a funny story. My friend was trying to make a stop animation video some type ago and was dealing with really high resolution photos on his expensive computer and finally went to compile his video and it took around 10 hours and was 78gb (yes 78gb!) For a around a 15 second movie .. lol something in the settings was wrong obviously. Was pretty funny though cause he didn't notice until he tried to upload it to youtube

Yep why I got rid of my "Super Pro" HD camera. You needed a fast RAID array and a "horse" machine to manipulate the video my new camera shoots on AHCHD and it still looks stellar and although I can shoot at 1080 I usually shot at 720 over cranked to 60 FPS). For my content I can not tell the difference. Many people do not understand how highly compressed BluRay is in the first place as PRO HD cameras shoot at least 12.5 megs a second (or over 40 gigs an hour) never mind if it was shot on RED or something
