6187396.jpgtruyrty.jpg Being the lucky owner of both the iPad2 and the XOOM - I'd feel comfortable testifying at any grand jury hearing of the following results in the area of the GPS operation in both devices. The photo on the left is the iPad 2 in a 2011 Camaro seen in the below link. The great thing about both pads is - they easily Velcro to the dash by securing a strip of Velcro on the outside edge of the folding book type case. You then secure the matching Velcro on the TOP portion of your dash up by the windshield - and within one to two seconds - the device is rock sold and not going anywhere.
The following - though I should have known - doesn't to the logic of pads - as you will see in a second. Talking the XOOM first - it came to mind that where it IS a GPS - (self-standing) - if I were to download one of the GPS map apps (GMA) that were stored on the XOOM - I shouldn't need to be on-line to have the GPS work to its fullest extent. Sounds logical...right? When I tried it - I was like a kid winning the lottery. It worked incredibly perfect. Said differently - if you own the XOOM - and you have a GMA on the device - you can use it in any vehicle - OFF line. In full flight mode. No wifi. No blue tooth. No internet. Nothing. This means to us in this position - NO EATING AWAY AT OUR monthly GIGABYTES. Cheap...cheap....cheap. How much better can it get.
The iPad - on the other hand - supposedly has a stand along GPS - but will not work off-line - on - the GPS. Now I'm sure they'll be those - more into this stuff than I am who will explain why. The problem is - it makes no difference why: the 3G iPad 1 or 2 - with a GPS built in - will not work on NON-internet GPS. As to which device I personally like better? It was iPad all the way until I made this discovery. Now I'm an honest 50/50.
I will say however - apps for the XOOM are a joke - both in quantity and quality - and if this OS expects to remain in business - it might be a good idea if you started the ball rolling because you are waaayyyy behind.
Anyone wishing to see larger photos of these two GPS set ups in this Camaro

I almost feel bad for Garmin. Heck they charge more than I paid for my phone just for maps!. Yeah you can use them offline so its better for camping and hiking. But for driving smart phones are killing garmin
Android tablets will eventually outsell ipad tablets just as the phones have. This is the beginning of the Android tablet. We will have this discussion in a year and you will see many many more apps. Android is unifying itself and this is very bad for Apple. Apple knows this and is launching a slew of lawsuits to slow down the inevitable.

That may sound good on paper (what you said) but there is no way in hell that will EVER happen. Apple products are geared so a 3 year old can use them. That - in itself - makes it and will keep it in the winner class. Androids requires 6.4 years at Harvard; 2.9 years at Yale and 6.1 years at Princeton (combined) to figure it out. Wayyyy too complicated. Apple iPad is a legend in its own time and half the size and weight of the XOOM. And God Himself couldn't convince me Android will NEVER have the QUANTITY or QUALITY of apps - iTunes has. Rebuttals would be fruitless. Like my company - STYLUS-R-US - Apple has no competition and never will. It is too easy; too light wight; too thin (like a ZERO-ONE / OUUU) and there is just no way anything can even hurt the iPad. Apple also has TV commercials (20 to one over any other company) and the NAME and they are sold everywhere. XOOM hasn't a chance. Sure XOOM is nice and I too like it. And it is better for a car GPS. But - I have both and made countless comparisons and there is just no contest. iPad wins. Also - yes I know that the iPhone can also be used as a GPS in flight mode. If they had only done this for the iPad - my XOOM would be back in the store.
Actually, the iPad has another thing going for them that the Xoom doesn't. It's called exclusivity. Exclusivity as in, NO ONE ELSE HAS AN iPAD. If you want to buy an iPad, there is no 'clone' running iOS. You have to get it from Apple.
Xoom's competition is not just Apple, but also Asus, Samsung, and whoever else decides to get into the market with Honeycomb. Therefore, it isn't just the apps that will kill them, it will be just competition and who can bring the experience better.
The thing about a 3 year old can use it... That is the point of Apple's function, to make 'appliance computing'. Which is a good and bad thing. The good thing is it is promoting technology for everyone, but bad as it also creates idiotic users. And by 'idiotic users' is that being too simple does not stimulate growth intellectually, it just stagnates it.
And yes, I know there are smart people out there who use it, but at the same time, I don't see it being a 'challenge' to use it or encourage people to do more with it. But again, that's just me.
As far as Android not lasting due to apps...lol.. ok.
Motion X Drive GPS app - is by far the best of the best. This is supported when you see iTunes using it for their icon on NAVIGATION. I've had and used this app on my iPhone for several years so I'm well versed on its operation and its sister app - GPS HD - a tracking version (which they could have installed in Motion X but this was a way of getting more $$). Truth is - we all have a sickness of some type - and just one of mine is - I buy and try all of the decent looking GPS map apps - so no doubt - these two mentioned - are the best. I've spent hundreds just to test them all out.
You mentioned having tried using your iPhone in the flight mode and it working for you like the XOOM does in flight mode on GPS. Again I will say - that is really strange that Apple would incorporate that ability to use the GPS in the iPhone - and not the iPad. It's not the only strange thing however. Our STYLUS-R-Us company makes over 45 diffedrent styluses that all use the same no pressure required tip. I have a standard I call the 100/100. That means that IF (IF) you follow instructions - you can touch the device screen 100 times - and it will activate 100 times: no misses. And it does this FLAWLESSLY on the iPad and XOOM. But the Galaxy - (the XOOMS child) it only works like 90/100 - which is not good enough for us to promote and tell people it will work on the Galaxy - even though it is still better than any other stylus for it - it's still not good enough for us. POINT: what are they doing to all these devices these days - that one will do something - yet another won't. Especially made by the same company. That doesn't add up.

It happened with personal computers. It's happening with Android phones. It will happen with tablets. Apple makes great products. This post is being typed from a Mac. But you can't discount history. Apple will eventually not be able to compete with barrage of equally capable yet cheaper Android tablets that will hit the market. Just as developers came around to Android phones, they will come around to Android tablets.
While iPhone/iPads are the-dog-can-use-it easy, Androids aren't complicated. I'd be embarrassed to say I didn't understand a cell phone. Have you honestly met someone who's USED an Android device and walked away saying it's too hard, hand me an iProduct???
