Question Asking for Password and Trouble loading CWM Recovery

    Hi all,

Newbie here Anyway, I bought a Xoom MZ604 from Hong Kong last year and everything was working fine until one day it asks for a password that I did not set (probably left it uncharged for too long?). I searched around and found out that there is currently no solution to this... I've tried flashing back to HWI69 with cache & userdata erased but it still asks for a password. So I decided to try and root the device but I couldn't get CWM to load from recovery. I've tried different CWMs (eos-recovery-r6, recovery-clockwork-5.8.3.1-wingray, recovery-rogue, recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm) but they all gave me the android with exclamation mark when entering Android Recovery. Below are the steps I performed:

    1. Boot xoom to fastboot mode
    2. From PC "fastboot oem unlock"
    3. Reboot xoom to fastboot mode
    4. From PC "fastboot flash recovery [recovery image file]"
    5. Reboot xoom and select Android Recovery
    6. Android Bot with Exclamation Mark
    7. If I press Vol+ with Power button, the default Android Recovery menu will be displayed.

So does anyone know where I've went wrong?

p.s - my device does not have USB debugging enabled.

Welcome to the forum. Glad you decided to join us. Enable usb debugging and retry, Astrix has a great root guide here.

If you can't boot into the OS to check usb debugging you might try the unlock command which will wipe your Xoom and then you should be able to boot the OS.
Boot into fastboot, then unlock it (fastboot oem unlock)

What happened when you tried to unlock with fastboot? Did anything come up on the Xoom's screen?

Yes, I was able to unlock the device using fastboot and flash CWM into recovery (no error shown on Xoom or PC), but when I reboot to enter Android Recovery I only see android bot with exclamation mark.

So when you flashed the recovery, you got a visible confirmation on the Xoom with no errors, then you booted straight into recovery, not into the ROM first?

The stock ROM will keep replacing the custom recovery when it boots, even rooted.

    Yes, after I typed

    fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.8.3.1-wingray.img

    PC shows:
    sending 'recovery' (4410 KB)...
    OKAY [ 0.361s]
    writing 'recovery'...
    OKAY [0.504s]
    finished. total time: 0.865s

    Xoom shows:
    Flashing allowed for partition recovery
    OneWire: Charger is connected...
    Battery charge level: 98%
Flashing StorMgr partition recovery STATUS: - done!

Then I issued 'fastboot reboot' and use the Volume Down key to boot into Android Recovery... same result

I'm surprised the recovery isn't there after the fastboot.

At the moment, the two things I can think of left to try are to flash the entire image for your Xoom from the moto site using fastboot and then proceed to root it from a factory state like this:

[HOW] Rookie Rooting, Flashing And UnRooting Under One Roof

Or if that does not work you could think about Astrix's instructions from here:

    Help with bricked 4G Xoom

Either way you would lose your data, so unless someone offers another suggestion consider those a last resort.

What recovery are you flashing? Link please, the version of the recovery you're using isn't one that is compatible with the Xoom. You can download the zip to one of the other recoveries and extract the recovery.img and fastboot it again.
    ClockworkMod 3.2.0.0 (R4c) (New 6/10/11)

CWM Rogue Recovery v1.5.0 (Updated 5/6/12)

    Goo.im Downloads - Downloading eos-recovery-r6-softkeys.zip
    Command would be:
    adb reboot bootloader
    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
    fastboot reboot
