If I try to flash a different custom recovery, I get preflash validation failure.. so at least nobody can accidentally brick that way.![]()
Does the error read out on the tablet or on command prompt?

so i did the same thing just now, and i take it u re flashed the stock one u had correct?
cause i got the pre flash failure too, on cmd and on device, and then before flashing the stock recovery back i rebooted, and it would only boot to fastboot protocal and top of the screen said fast boot failure, so
all in all i softbricked my tab,
but with a quick fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (the stock recovery) and all is well again!!!
the meaning of the story is as it stands for recovery patition, it can be flashed, but only with the stock .img ....for now, who know it may be failing cause we both tryied with recoverys not made for this.

So... I really want to see if flashing the system image will work in this locked device, so what I'm thinging of doing to test this is,
With my Xoom, restore to 100 percent stock, then re lock the boot loader, root it and pull the images like we just did with the xyboard, the try to fast boot flash the system.img and see what happens, if it fails and then boots into fast boot with the failure flash errors when we know for sure what the outcome would be if we did it on the xyboard

Sounds like a plan. I had tried to fastboot flash a custom recovery to see what would happen, then got the validation failure at prompt only. Tried with two separate recoveries. No flash and no problem booting afterward. My stock flash works like a charm. I tweeted out to hashcode for s##ts and giggles. I'm gonna dive in more, but I'll be out of the loop for a couple days. Work work work.

As soon as i can figure out how to pull apart the recovery image, I think I can get some leeway with the custom recovery. Then it's just a matter of getting past the flash validation and testing it out.
