I have worked with custom firmware on HTC devices during the 1.5 /1.6 firmware days, but am admittingly a novice when it comes to insuring OTA downloads are going to take on a formerly rooted Moto honeycomb device.
I really feel like the deleted bloatware is my issue here, but I am at a loss as to how to correct my course. My Xyboard is loaded up with tons of nonsense verizon apps again and is "unrooted". Thanks for any recommendations here.

you have two options
find the recovery log at
/cache/recovery/last_log and open with any text reader and see what fails, this is a long process because although u added the apps that were missing I can bet that they are not the hash matching apks, ( inside the log will provide u with the hashes that are needed) so u would have to match the hash the updater script is looking for with the apks that u found.
again this is not the recommenced way. ( but a must if you are using a device without the stock fast boot files )
luck for u and a vzw xyboard users the official fast boot files have been outed.
find the files and instructions here XYBoard Official FastBoot Files
you can either manually flash each
, use my script (included in the OP at the link) or use RSDlite ( Motorola fast boot tool)

Wow. This worked perfectly. Thanks for the links to Fastboot files. Took the OTA 4.04 update without a hitch. Now it's just a matter of rerooting and freezing all this VZ junk on here (I am in Canada using the device without a SIM anyway).
