The best way to get someone's attention is to include the word "Pie" !
Just posting to say "Hi" before I go back to reading after registering.
I'm particularly interested in rooting / custom ROMs and GED conversion.
I'm using a 32Gb Wifi & 3g version. If I understand correctly, I can use the US image on the UK 3g Xoom to convert to GED and get OTA ICS but that I will be left with a WiFi only Xoom in GED mode. I can later return to the original image and restore back to UK 3g on Honeycomb 3.2 - If my understanding is not correct, please put me straight and save me from creating a brick.
Before I go back to reading...
My friend (who has an iPhone) bought his wife a Blackberry tablet.
I asked him to bring it with him next time he comes to visit me because I wanted to wrap them both in pastry.
I wanted to make an Apple and Blackberry pie !
Flame me now.... Get it over with...

Welcome to the forum.
Glad you decided to join us.
What is Rooting on Android? The Advantages and Disadvantages
Here's a great guide, be sure and read, read, read. Yes you can always go back to stock and relock your bootloader. Part of the root process is unlocking the bootloader, your Xoom will be wiped so anything you want to save you will to transfer to your PC or be on your sdcard.

hello and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome guys and thanks for the links, Grant. I've probably already perused most of those posts but it's useful to have those links in a handy place.
I've been doing a fair amount of reading and viewing videos on rooting and loading custom ROMs recently and I've seen many methods listed as "Wifi Only" and I've been concerned about performing such procedures on a 3g enabled unit.
One of the posts I seem to remember reading was that it is safe to perform a GED conversion on a 3g enabled UK Xoom but that one sacrifices the 3g facility in the process.
For the purposes of my experimentation, I am happy to lose the 3g for the duration as long as it is otherwise safe to do (acknowledging the caveat that unlocking the bootloader and tinkering with these beasts may not be 100% safe to start with).
Unfortunately, I've only read this in one place and I cannot even remember where it is that I have read it.
I booted up into fastboot mode once but chickened out because I'm not too sure that I trust the USB hook-up.
When using ADB I've noticed that the Xoom has a tendency to fall off and refuse to connect until I remove the USB cable and re-attach.
For debugging, I generally use the TCP/IP mode now - That remains connected until a DHCP lease renewal request. So, I've set looooooooong lease-times to give me the most stable ADB connection I can muster.
The instability of the USB ADB connection concerns me enough to have dissuaded me from risking the Xoom on an unlock/root attempt so far.
... but I've decided to bite the bullet in a couple of days and give it a go.
I'll be sure to report my findings, of course.
Thanks again. Looking forward to chatting with you guys further in the future.
BTW, this forum's rather tricky to navigate and post into using the Xoom !
I had so many issues with the text input box that I had to resort to typing my reply offline into a text-file and then using copy/paste.

Update - Nope! That didn't work either... I ended up going to the Microsloth PC and using that instead after copying the file to that machine to paste it in from there... Ugh!

On the forum, go to "Settings", then "General Settings", then change "Message Editor Interface" to "Basic Editor".

My fingers thank you.
Typing is still a little laggy but at least I can now edit replies as I type them.
This is much better.

Cheers. I did think about using Tapatalk but...
A) It costs money.
B) Some of the reviews report issues with it.
C) It only seems to work with some forums and didn't want to part with money for something that isn't going to recognise the forums I use most often.
I can tolerate the small amount of lag I get using this forum. It's just a bit of a niggle. It's not almost completely unworkable like the YouTube comments-box. That really sucks!
UPDATE - I got it. If I like it, I'll recommend it. If I don't I'll winge about it for a while...

Urm.... any idea how to add a new forum?
I tried its name - no go.
I tried its URL - no go.
I did suspect before I bought it that it only worked with the forums that were in its directory....
