New member looking for advice about new OS

Hi. New member here. I have owned my Xoom ( MZ604) since 2011, and it has been used mostly by my wife for browsing. It was out first tablet - we now mostly use Windows laptops and Samsung phones - never Apple! Put it away about 8 months ago when it was starting to show its age and wife complained about it being slow and unable to show some web content. After 5 years, I decided to upgrade to Samsung tablet which meets her needs.

Decided yesterday to pulll out the Xoom to see about using it as a local recipe reader from recipe files on my laptop (Easier to keep near at hand while cooking than a laptop), and discovered that it might be possible to upgrade the Xoom to Android 4.4.2, 5, or maybe even 6(!) at some time in the future. Have read everything I can find, and I think I understand what is going on, but I have a lingering fear that I have missed something.

This forum seems to be a great resource for people like me - I just need to learn the language you are all speaking.<g>

I read somewhere that 4.1.2 locked down the OS so that it could not be rooted on the Xoom. Is this correct? If so, then do I have to go back to V 3.0 in order to root it?

It seems like I can install several different versions of the OS on the machine and use some sort of boot manager to choose the one I want. Is this a good understanding of the situation? For my simple purposes, would 4.4.2 or 5 be a better OS? I see that the camera does not work in the current release of 5, so I am tempted to stay away from it for now.

I have all my data, etc off of the machine, so I can play with it with no fear of losing anything - I would just like to avoid bricking it.

Thanks for any thought anyone might have. If this works, it will give me some confidence to try to root an old Samsung phone that I have hanging around. Maybe use it as a web cam.

    Ralph

The various Omni Rom threads in the Jelly Bean development part of the forum are the latest versions I know of. I did it. No fear of bricking because you can always get back into recovery and try the next install tweak until it works. At least that was my experience.

Thanks for the advice. I have gone and done the rooting and install of 4.4.2, and everything works, albeit a bit slowly, compared to my phone. I am now emboldened to perhaps try another flavor, but have the fear that it might be even more demanding of processor power and RAM, and will be even slower.

At least I have done it and now have something I can use when I am cooking to bring recipes to the work area, rather than going back and forth to my laptop. I am definitely going to try to root a few old phones that I have lying around.

This is a very good forum, and I will be haunting it for a while, looking for more tips.

    Thanks
