Help required for rooting and flashing roms

Hi all,

I recently bought Xoom and was thinking of rooting and flashing a custom rom. For this I need some help as I would be doing it for the first time.

I have and Indian model with the following details:
- Model MZ601 updated to 3.2
- Firmware config GAS_ASIA_USAEVRSTURTIRD_P037
- Baseband N_01.100.05P
- Baseband config ver UCAEVEUB1B8EU03F.0R
- Kernel 2.6.36.3
- Build number H.6.5-17-1


A. Rooting
Will the method given in this post (which I think is the same as Universal root) work fine? I think so, but want to confirm.

Please help me how to root xoom mz601 v3.1


B. Alternative roms:
So should I the Mooray rom as suggested in this thread? I am primarily looking for ad-hoc wifi, USB support for my portable hard disk drives and firewall (through Avast)

Need help in picking compatible ROM(s) to flash



C. Flashing roms
Not very sure how to do flash, is it to be done the same way as the Tiamat recovery console was flashed? Can you please help me with it?


D. Returning to stock
Also want to understand how to flash back to stock (since my device is still under warranty). Will the method posted in this thread along with using the other international image from Motorola work fine?

Welcome to the forum.Glad you decided to join us. You would root using Universal Root. Once you're rooted we can talk about the roms, theres even some ICS roms available.

Yes, as long as you know a little adb and fastboot.

Thanks ggrant3876 and Astrix, I believe that I am rooted now as the recovery image is still there (Seems the recovery gets overwritten if you don't "flash" the universal root zip immediately).

Unfortunately, I didn't expect everything to get wiped... Though no major harm done, as I didn't have any personal data.

Don't have access to a wifi connection for some time at least, so update from android market will have to wait - I am assuming that all apps linked to my account will automatically get installed as soon as I login?

Now to custom roms: Which will be the best one for me to use for my wifi+3G? The Mooray mod seem to have the features I am particularly looking for. ICS sounds good in theory, but not sure how it will work, especially the 3G part - which I wouldn't like to loose. I would like to have a more stable system, as it will be used by people other than me.

Another question, once I flash alternative rom will the data get wiped again? Also is the stock 3.2 version available for flashing in case I like the stock better?

Would appreciate your help on this and also on how to actually carry out the process.

EDIT: There is a superuser app so I am definitely rooted.

I don't know much about adb and fastboot, but I hope that there will be simple commands (like for rooting) which can be used in the hope-so-not event of unrooting and locking for warranty purposes.
