problem with enter recovery or using volume rockers

Hi! i am new here. and my first post! i want to factory reset my xoom, but the problem i'm having is trying to get into recovery mode. volume down + power isnt working. i cant get it to boot into anything really. all i get is the regular cold booting linux...reading odm 1 and then it boots into the os. I've tried using fastboot to unlock the tablet, it gets to the screen were i need to use volume down to change the option, but nothing happens. the volume buttons dont work. but it seems to exit when i press volume up + power. also the only way i can get the system into fastboot is by rebooting it, or doing a system restore from within the os and after it reboots it goes straight into fastboot. adb doesnt restart the bootloader. so i know atleast the volume up button works and i thought the volume down button might have been broken but it works within the os.
i've also tried using rsdlite with the xoom sbf but i get a failed ini error. any help would be greatful. thank you
i have a motorola xoom wifi with 3.1 os

Has ANYONE ever figured this out, I have nearly the same problem on my two Xoom's, both WingRay, running android 4.1.2, both updated from 3x by Google.
Two volumes and power produces a cold boot Linux message followed by a normal boot. The fastboot OEM unlock locks up locking for a device. Adb will connect but the only options I get are ,, update from USB , update from external card, wipe data, and reboot system. I can unlock, so no upgrades.
